Maidstone Market - Fall 2010 Champions
Maidstone takes early lead
For the match both sides were ready but Tortorella was missing Gary Easlick(trip), Rafael Godinho(work) and keeper Dario Garcia(flu). Easlick and Godinho were the top scorers for Tortorella and scored more than 50% of their team's goals. Without a keeper, Tortorella would be in trouble. This is the same type of situation Tortorella was handed when they played Maidstone in the championship match on November 30,2009. For Tortorella, Luis Vas would play keeper and did a pretty good job at it. All that Tortorella wanted to do is keep Maidstone from scoring early and hope for the best. Well it did not work out that way, about a couple minutes into the match, Gerber Garcia hits the ball to the far side near the far goal post. Standing there was Jefferson Ramirez of Maidstone along with Diego Guachambo of Tortorella. Ramirez was able to hit the ball into the net from a tight angle. Upsetting to be down a goal so early in the match, Tortorella had some offensive action but poor passing and handling of the ball prevented them from taking any good shots. Maidstone was able to attack but the shots went wide of the net. Deigo Marles half field goal gave Maidstone the championship trophy For Tortorella, being one goal down was not that terrible since plenty of time was still on the clock. So about 10 minutes into the second half, Steven Orrego has the ball just past the mid field line inside the Maidstone half. Orrego fires a high floater that goes over the head of Alex Mesa and into the top far corner of the net. A great up lifting goal for Tortorella which evened up the match. Mesa must not have seen the shot since the lighting is poor on that half of the field. All that Tortorella needed to do is keep Maidstone from scoring again. Maidstone was attacking well but they were not able to score. Tortorella had an attack but many times would lose the ball inside the Maidstone half. A foul was called on Luis Vas of Tortorella inside their own goalie box with a penalty kick for Maidstone and a yellow card for Vas. Luis Correa would take the penalty kick with Rodolfo Marin of Tortorella stepping in the net. Correa ran up and shot the ball over the cross bar, a missed chance to win. Even with Tortorella a man down, Maidstone was unable to score. It was looking as if the Match could end up in a draw but minutes later it all changed. Vas takes a goalie kick and kicks it up the field. Diego Marles gets the ball and seeing that Vas is way up in the goalie box fires a shot into the far corner of the net to give Maidstone the lead. With that goal, it would be difficult for Tortorella to score again since they had a limited offensive drive. With Maidstone attacking, a hand ball was called on Andres Arango of Tortorella inside the penalty box. Roger Quinceno would take the kick and blasted the ball into the net to give Maidstone a two goal margin. With that goal, the game was all but over. This with win, Maidstone has won the championship match for the past five seasons. Can they do it again in the spring?
