Maidstone Market - Fall 2012 Champions
Maidstone Market Takes Two Goal Lead
The match started late since some of the Tortorella Pools players thought that the match would start at 7:00pm. Tortorella was missing a key forward, Jose Almonsa, since David Rodriguez who normally plays forward still had an ankle injury and would re-injure it again during the first half of play and would need to be taken out. In his place, Leslie Czeladko would play forward but he usually plays in the defensive position. We had fewer then 30 spectators for this match. From the start, Maidstone came out strong and were passing well up the field. They had several good attacks and shots that Tortorella keeper, Craig Caiazca, had to save. Tortorella without a healthy David Rodriguez had trouble attacking and seemed to be playing with six men. So about 15 minutes into the first half, Maidstone was able to score. A ball is passed to John Romero of Maidstone as Stiven Orrego is guarding him. Romero heads toward the Tortorella goal but Orrego slips on the ground and now Romero is along with the goal in front of him. Romero takes a 15 yards shot that finds the net to give Maidstone the lead(see photo). So just before the half would conclude, Maidstone was able to score again. This time Antonio Padilla passed the ball to Hector Marles, who from about 4 yards blasted the ball into the net. Tortorella Tries to Come Back
During the second half, Tortorella was had their full team and was playing very well. They were now on the attack. Play was hard on both sides of the field and a couple times play had to be interrupted due to hard tackles. So with about 15 minutes left in the match, Tortorella Pools was able to score. Danny Salazar had the ball and at the top of the Maidstone goalie box passed the ball to his right to Jose Almonsa. Almonsa trapped the ball to take the shot. Alex Mesa, Maidstone keeper, along with a Maidstone defender came out to block any shot that Almonsa would take. Almonsa shot from about 11 yards out to the far side past the on coming Mesa. The ball went past Mesa and was heading right into the far post net. In the mean time, Oscar Reinoso of Tortorella was able to get behind the play without the Maidstone defenders noticing him. As the ball was about to cross the goal line near the far post, Reinoso taps the ball into the net to get credit for the goal. Play was hard at this point since another goal by Tortorella, and the match would be tied. On one play, about 13 minutes left in the match, Gerber Garcia comes running hard and trips Rodolfo Marin of Tortorella Pools. For this foul, Garcia is given a red card so now Maidstone would play with just six men. Tortorella tried to score again but just could not finish the shot. In the end, Maidstone was able to hold on to win the match. Maidstone and Tortorella have meet in the championship match five times with Maidstone winning all five. This is Maidstone's 9th time in a row winning the championship match. Maidstone has been playing in the league for 11 seasons but has won the championship match nine times. What a great record for them.
