It was a cold and windy night, typical of fall weather in the evening. Over-all, the night was not as bad as it could. The temperature started off at 47 degrees with everyone dressed for the weather. In the championship game, we would play two 35 minute halves. Both sides had all their players. Game started on time. During the first half of play, as the ball was going out of bounds, two players went for the ball to save it, crashed into our timer to destroy the base that holds the timer in the air. The timer fell to the ground but all the power connections held in place to keep the time for the rest of the game.
Just seconds into the first half, Mark Bako of East Hampton from about 35 yards fires a bullet that hits the Maidstone goal post. If shot just inches toward the center, it would have ended up being a great goal. Play continued with both sides attacking well. Overall, Maidstone had more shots at the East Hampton goal but they were very inaccurate. Maidstone could have scored when John Romero of Maidstone was standing about six(6) feet from the East Hampton goal all alone. The ball is crossed to him, as the ball approaches, Romero tries to tap the ball into the net, but as he swings his leg, the ball goes between his legs which caused him to lose balance and fall down to miss the chance to give his team the lead.
A scoreless tie is the way the second half began. The game so far was played cleanly without many hard physical contacts. It was looking as if the game would end up in a tie as play was seen at both ends of the field. With about 23 minutes left in the game, East Hampton is given a direct kick. William Solis would take it. Solis hits the ball to the far side to team mate Justin Carpio who is standing near the far goal post. Carpio, all alone at this point gets the ball and fires it into the Maidstone net to give his team the lead.
A big let down for Maidstone but they still had about 23 minutes left in the game. It did not take long for East Hampton to score again. Just two minutes later, Justin Carpio has the ball and hits it to Bako, who was able to dribble past a couple of Maidstone defenders and from about 15 yards fire a bouncing grounder into the net past the hands of Alex Mesa.
Now with just 16 minutes left in the game, Solis hits the ball to Bako, who from about 15 yards hits a bullet just under the cross bar to finish off Maidstone Market.
Maidstone knew that they were finished, so with just several minutes left in the game Carpio scores from inside the goalie box to give his team a convincing lead.
With under a minute to go, Maidstone is given a direct kick. Jorge Naula of Maidstone took the kick and fired it toward the East Hampton goal. East Hampton goalie, Esteban Aguilar could not hold onto it and standing there was Romero, who tapped the ball into the net.
With that goal, the game concluded with the trophies handed out just in time before the rain. Over-all a good, exciting game to watch.
